Salesforce acquires Fin (ex-Intercom) for $3.6B to boost Agentforce
Salesforce announced on Monday (June 15) the acquisition of Fin, the AI agent platform for customer service (formerly Intercom), for approximately $3.6 billion.
What is Fin
Originally known as Intercom, Fin offers an AI agent capable of resolving customer queries across multiple channels — live chat, WhatsApp, SMS, phone calls, Slack, and more. The platform is recognized for its ability to understand context and solve complex problems without human intervention.
Why Salesforce bought it
CEO Marc Benioff stated that Salesforce wants to use Fin technology to boost Agentforce, the enterprise platform that allows companies to create custom AI agents for task automation.
"Fin brings proven agent technology, a deep commitment to customer success, and an incredible AI team that will complement Agentforce with powerful service agent capabilities," Benioff said.
Deal details
The transaction is expected to close in the last quarter of Salesforce fiscal year 2027 (early 2027). Fin co-founder and CEO Eoghan McCabe will remain in charge.
McCabe wrote on X: "With Salesforce resources, this will only accelerate. And yet little will practically change. I will still be CEO, Des will still be running R&D, and we will both still be committed to continuing to lead this category."
Market impact
The acquisition reflects the big tech race for autonomous AI agent solutions in customer service. Salesforce, already heavily invested in AI with Agentforce, is consolidating its position in a market McKinsey estimates at $400 billion by 2030.
It is another sign that the era of production AI agents is no longer a promise — it is reality, and large companies are willing to pay billions to avoid falling behind.
