Cursor Origin: The platform challenging GitHub in the age of AI coding agents

Cursor has announced Origin, a code storage and git hosting platform that puts the company on a direct collision course with GitHub. Announced during the Compile 2026 conference, Origin arrives as traditional git infrastructure begins showing its limits under the volume of code generated by AI agents.

Why a new Git host? GitHub was designed for human cadence — a developer opens a branch, writes code for hours, opens a PR, waits for review, and merges. But dozens or hundreds of AI agents can clone, branch, commit, and rebase the same repository simultaneously in seconds. It is a fundamentally different load profile.

Impact numbers — The launch demo showed Origin supporting 22.6 commits per second on a single repository. PR volume on GitHub has grown 3.6x driven by coding agents, and Microsofts platform has faced recurring instability.

Key differentiators:

  • Full Git compatibility
  • Merge conflict and CI failure resolution by AI agents
  • API and MCP for programmatic integration
  • NVMe + S3 architecture with infinite replicas
  • Stacked PRs (inherited from Graphite, a startup acquired by Cursor)

The waitlist is open for fall 2026. Cursor also teased a new proprietary model that goes beyond coding.
