Claude Fable 5 Is Back Online After 6-Day Global Shutdown

Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 came back online on Thursday (June 18), after six days of one of the most dramatic AI shutdowns in history.

The model was taken down on June 12 by a US export control directive from the Trump administration, after Amazon’s cybersecurity team reported an alleged jailbreak. Following days of direct negotiations between senior Anthropic staff and White House officials, access has now been restored.

What Actually Happened

Katie Moussouris, CEO of Luta Security and the only outside expert to read the classified report behind the ban, revealed that the trigger was as simple as three words: “Fix this code.”

Researchers took open-source code with known CVEs and asked Fable 5 to “review” it for security issues. The model refused. They then asked it to “fix this code.” This time, it complied. The sequence is standard defensive security work — not a technical jailbreak.

Over 300 cybersecurity leaders signed an open letter at freefable.org demanding not just Fable 5’s restoration, but broader reform of how the government makes such decisions.

Claude Mythos 5, the unrestricted cybersecurity variant, remains under stricter access controls through Project Glasswing.
