Anthropic has announced the launch of Claude Corps, an ambitious national fellowship program across the United States. With an initial investment of $150 million, the program will train 1,000 early-career individuals in using Claude and place them at nonprofit organizations for one year, full-time and in-person.

The rationale

Anthropic acknowledges that the benefits of transformative AI systems may come hand-in-hand with significant labor market disruptions. Claude Corps is a direct attempt to address this problem.

The companies building this technology have a responsibility to make sure the benefits are fully realized and widely shared, and to invest directly in the workers absorbing the change, Anthropic stated in the announcement.

How it works

The program is a partnership between three organizations:

  • Anthropic: Funds the program, leads strategy, and provides Claude expertise
  • CodePath: America's largest collegiate CS education provider, serving as the fellows' employer of record
  • Social Finance: Nonprofit leading measurement and building financial vehicle to scale the program

Fellow experience

  • Duration: 12 months
  • Salary: $85,000/year + benefits
  • Intensive training: Initial training from Anthropic and CodePath, plus 5 hours/week of ongoing education
  • Support: CodePath mentor, Anthropic office hours, generous Claude token budget
  • 400+ host organizations: Including Braven, Goodwill Industries, YMCA, RAINN, Code the Dream, and many more

Expected impact

Claude Corps places Anthropic at the forefront of a crucial debate: how to distribute AI's benefits beyond major tech hubs. If the program succeeds, the company will have a model for widening AI's benefits during a period of vast economic change.

The Claude Corps announcement was accompanied by the release of Anthropic's policy framework for addressing AI's impact on work.

Implications: This is a significant move that goes beyond corporate social responsibility. By investing $150 million in human capital, Anthropic is building a base of skilled users and an ecosystem of organizations that understand AI's value — a long-term strategy that benefits both society and the company's business.
