Allbirds Becomes Smartbird: From Wool Sneakers to AI Infrastructure in One of the Year's Boldest Pivots
In one of the most unexpected corporate pivots of the year, Allbirds — known for its merino wool sneakers — announced a complete transformation into an AI infrastructure company. The firm rebranded as Smartbird and appointed Nadia Carlsten, former AWS executive, as its new CEO.
The company's shares surged 39% on the news, albeit from a low baseline (below $4). The move, which had been speculated since April when the company changed its name to NewBird AI, now materializes with a new identity and leadership.
Carlsten joins with the mission of repositioning Smartbird in the AI infrastructure market, a segment dominated by giants like NVIDIA, AWS and Microsoft. The company, valued at approximately $48 million, represents about one-thousandth of what OpenAI plans to spend on CAPEX this year.
The Smartbird case illustrates a curious trend: traditional sector companies trying to ride the AI wave through rebrandings and radical pivots. Whether execution will match ambition remains to be seen.
